- Shipping containers stand stacked at a storage facility. The port in Lagos is the slowest port of its size. Most ships require more than six weeks for their cargo to be off-loaded and to clear customs. The port lacks space because it has not been substantially upgraded in nearly 30 years. For each cargo container leaving the country with exports, ten arrive - creating a giant surplus of empty containers and nowhere to store them. Corruption also plays a major part in slowing port operations. By creating an endless and slow moving bureaucracy for incoming goods, officials instill an incentive for importers to bribe for faster service.
